STAVLOS retreat

We created this unique boutique resort on the remote island of Karpathos, sculptured by the harsh winds. The location is on one of the island's most beautiful and pristine beaches. The concept derives from the local traditional architecture. STAVLOS stands for the cubic-shaped cottages, spread in Karpathos country. They are hidden in earth niches for protection from winds and heat.

The pursuit of STAVLOS

The wind sculpted and shaped this land, the life of the island, its history and its people. It passes through ancient soils, descends from the mountain of Afiartis and disappears far into the sea of Phoenicia. The STAVLOS, small stone farmhouses, sink and perch in cracks and crevices. They turn and open to the leeward side.

We felt the old earth relief, we listened to it, in the place where the song of the sirens mixed with thyme and saltiness sinks into the serenity. Our own STAVLOS is a handful of stone houses that follow the earth relief and sink accordingly, with direction north to side, where the wind blows from.

Visible and open to the south, they overlook the beautiful untouched calm beach. The roofs are planted with the same wild grasses that thrive around and  the buildings disappear. The integration into the landscape is complete.
